Our Advice… But first, what are the alternatives? If you want to travel by train but don't want to buy a BritRail Pass in advance, you can buy Point To Point Tickets at the time of travel in the UK. There are no local bargains in First Class during the week. In Standard Class, there are some cheap fares on offer. The best fares frequently require advance purchase and reservation and are very restricted and therefore difficult to get for the overseas visitor. For instance, these fares require an advance purchase with only a few seats available on each train, will restrict you to certain trains on which you can travel (after rush hour), and are usually non-refundable. So, if you miss the train that your ticket is valid on, you will have to buy another full fare ticket. These advance purchase/restricted fares are no good if you are planning a trip immediately following arrival by air. They allow the traveler no flexibility. ‘Saver Fares’ can be bought at the time of travel. While they do not have quotas, they do have strict time and day restrictions. Passengers will be charged the full fare if they travel on restricted trains, which tend to be in the mornings and evening rush hour periods. Stopovers en route are not allowed. | |
